Day 9: Our God is Jehovah Rohi: The Lord is My Shepherd

Our God is Jehovah Rohi. Each name attributed to God throughout Scripture reveals a unique aspect. These names show His character and relationship with His people. One such name is “Jehovah Rohi,” meaning “The Lord is my Shepherd.” This beautiful title is rooted in Psalm 23. It is echoed in John 10:1-5. It provides profound insight into God’s care, guidance, and provision for His children.

The Shepherd’s Care in Psalm 23

Psalm 23, penned by King David, is one of the most beloved passages in the Bible. It opens with the declaration, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” In this simple yet profound statement, David acknowledges Jehovah Rohi as the One who provides for every need. A shepherd’s role is multifaceted feeding, leading, protecting, and nurturing the flock. David, once a shepherd himself, understood the intimate relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. He recognized that God fulfills this role perfectly for His people.

The psalm continues to describe how Jehovah Rohi leads His flock to green pastures. It symbolizes peace and provision. He restores the soul, offering renewal and strength in times of weariness. Even in the darkest valleys, the Shepherd is there, offering comfort and protection with His rod and staff. This imagery reassures believers of God’s unwavering presence and care, even in life’s most challenging seasons.

The Good Shepherd in John 10

Jesus further illuminates the concept of Jehovah Rohi in John 10:1-5. Here, He identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd. He knows His sheep by name. He leads them with love and authority. Unlike a hired hand who may abandon the flock in times of danger, Jesus emphasizes His commitment. He is dedicated to laying down His life for His sheep. This sacrificial love is the ultimate demonstration of His role as our Shepherd.

In this passage, Jesus also highlights the intimate relationship between the Shepherd and His sheep. The sheep recognize His voice and follow Him because they trust Him. This trust is built on the Shepherd’s consistent care and provision. For believers today, this speaks to the importance of cultivating a personal relationship with Christ through prayer, Scripture, and obedience. By learning to discern His voice amidst the noise of the world, we can confidently follow His guidance.

The Relevance of Jehovah Rohi Today

The name Jehovah Rohi is as relevant today as it was in David’s time. In a world filled with uncertainty, anxiety, and challenges, we can find peace in knowing that God is our Shepherd. He recognizes our needs before we voice them. He guides us on paths for our good and His glory.

When we feel lost or overwhelmed, we can turn to Jehovah Rohi for direction. When we face trials or walk through dark valleys, we can trust in His presence and protection. And when we feel weary or burdened, we can rest in His provision and restoration.

Final Thoughts

As Jehovah Rohi, God invites us into a relationship characterized by trust, dependence, and intimacy. He is not a distant deity but a compassionate Shepherd who walks closely with His flock. May we continually seek to know Him more deeply. Let us rest in the assurance that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for being our Shepherd. You guide us with Your wisdom. You protect us with Your mighty hand. Help us to trust You in every season of life.
