Active Service and Serving Others. In a world where individualism often takes precedence, the act of serving others can sometimes be overlooked. Yet, the Bible provides timeless wisdom on the importance of active service and selflessness. Two powerful passages, Matthew 25:35-40 and James 2:17, emphasize our responsibility to serve others with love. They call us to show faith in action.
The Heart of Service: Matthew 25:35-40
In Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus talks about the final judgment. He highlights acts of kindness and service as evidence of a life lived in alignment with God’s will. He says:
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.”
Matthew 25:35-36
When questioned by the righteous about when they had served Him in these ways, Jesus responds,
“Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
Matthew 25:40
This passage emphasizes that serving others is not just an act of charity but an act of worship. When we care for those in need—the hungry, the lonely, the sick, or the imprisoned—we are serving Christ Himself. It is a profound reminder that our faith is not just about belief but about action.
Faith in Action: James 2:17
James 2:17 reinforces this principle by stating, “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” This verse challenges us to examine the authenticity of our faith. True faith is not passive; it compels us to act. Good works do not earn salvation, but they are the evidence of a transformed heart.
James underscores that faith without action is incomplete. It is not enough to profess belief; we must show that belief through tangible acts of love and service. This is not a call to perfection but to intentionality—a commitment to live out our faith in practical ways.

The Intersection of Faith and Service
Together, these passages create a compelling call to action for believers. They remind us that serving others is not optional; it is integral to our faith journey. Active service reflects the heart of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45). It allows us to be His hands and feet in a world that desperately needs compassion and hope.
Serving others can take many forms. Volunteering at a local food bank is one way to serve. Visiting someone who is lonely or sick is another choice. You could also mentor a young person. Simply offering a listening ear to someone in need is valuable too. Small acts of kindness can have a profound impact when done with love and sincerity.

Practical Steps to Serve
If you’re unsure where to start, consider these practical steps:
- Pray for Guidance: Ask God to reveal opportunities where you can serve others. Prayer aligns our hearts with His will and opens our eyes to the needs around us.
- Start Small: Service doesn’t have to be grandiose. Start with small, consistent acts of kindness in your community or workplace.
- Use Your Gifts: Each person has unique talents and resources. Whether it’s cooking, teaching, organizing, or listening, use your gifts to bless others.
- Be Present: Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give is your time and attention. Be fully there with those you serve.
- Partner with Others: Join a local church group or community organization that aligns with your passions for service.
A Call to Think
As we think on Matthew 25:35-40 and James 2:17, let us ask ourselves: Are we actively living out our faith? Are we doing so through service? Are we seeking opportunities to care for “the least of these”? True service requires humility, empathy, and a willingness to step outside our comfort zones.
We fulfill God’s command by serving others. We also experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from being part of His work in the world. Let us strive to be people whose faith is alive—faith that moves beyond words into meaningful action.
May we take this call seriously and live lives marked by active service and love for others. In doing so, we honor God and make His presence known in the world around us.
Lord, thank You for the opportunity to serve others as a reflection of Your love. Open our eyes to the needs around us and guide us in using our gifts for Your glory. Help us to live out our faith through action and to serve with humility and compassion. May our lives be a testimony of Your grace and goodness. Amen.
