Perseverance in Prayer. In a world of instant gratification, waiting can feel like a spiritual burden. In Luke 18:1–8, Jesus shares a compelling parable. It is about a persistent widow and an indifferent judge. This parable teaches us the power of perseverance in prayer. It also highlights the necessity of such perseverance. This passage is not just about persistence—it’s about faith, justice, and trust in God’s timing.
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”
— Luke 18:1 (NIV)
Exposition of Luke 18:1–8
- The Widow’s Persistence: She repeatedly seeks justice from a judge who neither fears God nor respects people. Her relentless pursuit reflects the kind of tenacity Jesus commends in prayer.
 - The Unjust Judge’s Response: Though unmoved by morality, the judge grants her plea to avoid being worn out. Jesus makes a comparison with God’s character. An unjust judge responds to persistence. How much more will a just and loving God respond to His children.
 - God’s Assurance: Jesus assures that God will bring about justice for His chosen who cry out day and night. The delay is not denial—it’s divine timing.
 - The Final Question: “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” This challenges us to examine whether our faith endures even when answers seem delayed.
