A Room for Jesus, Our Immanuel. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it is easy to get caught up in the festivities. We often miss the profound significance of what we celebrate. The birth of Jesus Christ, our Immanuel, reminds us of God’s incredible love. It also demonstrates His wish to dwell among His people. As we think about this miraculous event, let us consider the importance of making room for Jesus. It is crucial to make space for Him in our lives. Mary and Joseph sought shelter for His arrival.
(Isaiah 7:14, Luke 2:7 NKJV)
Biblical Reflection
Isaiah 7:14 prophesied, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” This prophecy was fulfilled in the humble town of Bethlehem, where Mary gave birth to Jesus and laid Him in a manger because “there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7 NKJV). The imagery of Mary and Joseph being turned away from shelter is a poignant reminder. It shows how often our hearts can be too crowded with distractions, worries, and worldly pursuits. This prevents us from welcoming Christ fully.
The message of Immanuel is profound: God chose to dwell among us in human form, bringing salvation, hope, and peace. Yet, as in Bethlehem, He often finds no room in the hearts of those He came to save. The question we must ask ourselves is this: Have we made room for Jesus in our lives?
The Significance of “No Room”
The lack of space for Jesus in the inn is more than just a historical detail. It symbolizes the condition of many hearts today. There was no physical room for Christ in Bethlehem. Similarly, there are moments when we do not make room for Him in our lives. Daily routines keep us busy. We get distracted by worldly pursuits. Misplaced priorities often crowd out the presence of the One who came to save us.

This moment challenges us to examine our own hearts. Have we made space for Jesus? Are we willing to welcome Him into every area of our lives, even when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable? The manger reminds us that Christ is willing to meet us where we are. He does this no matter how humble or unprepared our hearts may feel.
A Call to Prepare Room
The Advent season is a beautiful opportunity to prepare room for Jesus. It is a time to think about His incredible love and sacrifice, allowing Him to transform our hearts and lives. Here are a few practical ways we can create space for Immanuel:
- Prioritize Time with Him
Amid the busyness of life, set aside intentional time for prayer, worship, and reading Scripture. Mary pondered the miraculous events surrounding Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:19). Similarly, we should take time to meditate on His Word. Doing so allows us to draw closer to Him. - Declutter Your Heart
Remove distractions that take your focus away from Christ. You might struggle with excessive worry or materialism. Unhealthy habits can also be a burden. Surrender these burdens to God. Invite Him to take His rightful place in your heart. - Serve Others
Jesus came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45). By serving those around us, we show His love. Acts of kindness, generosity, or simply offering a listening ear make room for His presence in our lives. - Share the Good News
The shepherds eagerly spread the word about Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:17). In the same way, we are called to share the hope of Christ with others. They did it with joy and enthusiasm. We should do the same. Whether through words or actions, let us be ambassadors of His love and grace.
Final Thoughts
The story of Jesus’ birth is not merely a historical account. It is a call to action for each of us today. Just as the innkeeper had no room for Mary and Joseph, we might also be tempted to exclude Christ. This can happen amidst life’s demands. Yet, the beauty of Immanuel is that God continues to knock on the door of our hearts. He longs to dwell with us.
As we celebrate this season, let us intentionally make room for Jesus. We should do this not just during Christmas but every day of our lives. Let us live with hearts wide open to His presence. Allow Him to transform us. Let Him guide us according to His will. For when we make room for Jesus, we experience the fullness of life that only He can bring.
A Prayer for Room in Our Hearts
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to be our Immanuel—God with us. Forgive us for the times when we have allowed distractions and busyness to crowd out Your presence. Today, we ask You to help us prepare room in our hearts for You. Teach us to rank You above all else and to live lives that show Your love and grace. May we be like the shepherds, eager to share the good news of Your coming with those around us. We welcome You into every part of our lives, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
